I am pleased to share that we have made an appointment to the position, Discipline Chair, Counselling of Dr Marie Boulianne.
Dr Marie Boulianne is a distinguished mental health clinician, academic, and leader whose career spans more than two decades at the forefront of Australian mental health practice. Holding a PhD, credentialled as a Mental Health Nurse and registered as a Counsellor, Marie brings a rare integration of clinical depth, scholarly expertise, and a proven record of leadership across both mental health and academic settings to her role as Chair of Counselling at ACAP.
Beyond her clinical work, Marie’s approach to practice extends to the broader dimensions of personal growth and well-being, supporting clients not only through their mental health challenges but also in building resilience, purpose, and direction in their lives. As a clinical supervisor, she is equally committed to the development of fellow practitioners, guiding them in both their professional competence and personal growth. She has held academic positions at leading Australian universities, teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and mentoring emerging counsellors and mental health professionals. Marie is also an active participant in research projects, contributing to the ongoing development of evidence-based practice and the broader mental health knowledge base.
Marie’s leadership credentials are equally strong. She currently holds chair positions within mental health organisations and has been part of the founding team behind the establishment of a brand new specialised private mental health hospital, a milestone achievement that speaks to both her clinical standing and her capacity to contribute meaningfully at a systems level, demonstrating a vision for mental health care that is both progressive and evidence-based.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the interim Chair, Dr Trevor Simper for his work in supporting the discipline over the last 6 months. I would also like to acknowledge discipline leads, Sally Thomson-Campora and A/Prof Traill Dowie.
